Niemandsland
The climate is deteriorating, capitalism is at its peak, social injustice is rampant, refuge can only be sought behind a screen, interpersonal connection is fading, everything is becoming too digital...
The world seems to be comprised solely of problems. However, amidst all this turmoil, a new generation is emerging. Since they can remember, they have been told that the world is soon going to end.
This belief stems partly from the fact that traditional institutions such as churches or politics, which historically provided security for society, were no longer seen as relevant at the time Generation Z was born. Additionally, the grim outlook on the climate, which has caused more than just concern in the majority of the population in recent years, contributes to the burden on the new generation. How do young individuals manage to develop their own identity and maintain optimism in the face of such chaos?
In an abstract sense, the term Niemandsland (no man‘s land) can symbolize the existential and philosophical quest for meaning and purpose in a complex and uncertain world. This work aims to explore the impact of the aforementioned factors on the succeeding generation and how they are altering their mindset.
The current socio-cultural circumstances have a significant influence on the identity of a generation. Considering these conditions, a generational portrait of today‘s young people, called Generation Z, was created. The insights gained are related to the aesthetics of the generation and adapted in the design of the publication. The scientific part of the thesis discovers, that todays Youth has a more hedonistic approach to aesthetic and design. Which is shown in the typography, imagery and graphic elements of the book.
